Fulbright Greater Los Angeles members gathered in Pasadena for “An Evening at the Theatre: Richard III Shakespeare Lecture & Play,” hosted at the regional theatre company A Noise Within. The event brought Fulbright alumni and friends together to enjoy one of Shakespeare’s most powerful political dramas while also engaging in thoughtful conversation about literature, history, and performance.

Before the performance, GLAC President Dr. Aaron J. Kleist, a university Shakespeare professor who had recently taught the play, offered attendees a pre-performance introduction. His remarks explored the historical context of Richard III, as well as staging challenges and interpretive choices that audiences might observe in the production.

The Pasadena production featured Julia Rodriguez-Elliott in the title role, presenting Shakespeare’s iconic tale of ambition, manipulation, and the ruthless pursuit of power. Set in the aftermath of civil war, the play follows Richard’s cunning rise to the throne through betrayal and political intrigue, one of Shakespeare’s most enduring explorations of corruption and authority.

As with many chapter gatherings, one of the evening’s greatest pleasures was simply bringing Fulbrighters together. Conversations ranged widely, from mathematics and science to film culture in Los Angeles, demonstrating the interdisciplinary curiosity and global perspective that define the Fulbright community. The evening concluded with lively discussion inspired by the performance and the timeless themes of Shakespeare’s work.
