The Exchange Alumni community gathered at the Electric Lodge in Venice for an inspiring evening of film, storytelling, and cross-cultural exchange. Exchange Stories: Alumni Film Night & Reception featured a special screening of two award-winning short films by National Geographic Fulbright Storytelling Fellow Sophie Pegrum, created during her time in Kyrgyzstan.
Hosted by U.S. Department of State Pacific Regional Fellow Grace Garrett, the event brought together California-based alumni, friends, and global-storytelling enthusiasts. Pegrum’s films explored themes of science, culture, and youth engagement in astronomy, offering intimate insight into life in Kyrgyzstan. She also previewed Cosmos Dreams, her forthcoming hybrid cine-documentary examining sky, space, nomadism, and the inspiring women of the Kyrgyz Space Program who aim to launch the country’s first satellite.
Following the screening, a lively Q&A and informal reception provided space for conversation and connection. Dr. Jill Humphries, Fulbright GLAC Co-Secretary, shared information about the chapter’s programs, events, and volunteer opportunities, and several attendees expressed interest in joining Fulbright Greater Los Angeles. The evening highlighted the power of storytelling to spark curiosity, foster dialogue, and deepen cross-cultural understanding.
