The Fulbright Film Interest Group, in collaboration with the Fowler Museum at UCLA, hosted a special screening of The Journey Within (2015), a documentary by filmmaker Mian Adnan Ahmed. The event brought together students, scholars, Fulbright alumni, and film enthusiasts for an evening of cinema, dialogue, and cross-cultural exchange.
Set in the post-9/11 era, The Journey Within explores the origins of Coke Studio, Pakistan’s groundbreaking music platform, and follows a broader search for identity through music. The documentary highlights the rich and diverse musical traditions of the region while examining how artistic expression can serve as a bridge across cultures and communities.
Following the screening, attendees participated in a thoughtful Q&A session with associate producer JC Diaz, moderated by Nile Green, Professor of History and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA. The discussion explored the film’s themes, production process, and the role of music in preserving cultural heritage and fostering understanding.
The evening concluded with a reception in the Fowler Museum courtyard, where guests continued the conversation over samosas and chai provided by Madi House. The event embodied Fulbright’s mission of promoting mutual understanding through cultural exchange and marked a successful launch for the newly established Fulbright Film Interest Group. The group aims to showcase lesser-known works by international filmmakers and use cinema as a platform for dialogue, learning, and global engagement.
